Macy’s Moving Ahead with Galleria Bloomingdale’s

Macy’s Inc. announced on Thursday that it would move forward with its plans to open a Bloomingdale’s department store in the Glendale Galleria this fall. The Cincinnati-based department store operator also announced several store closures but said they would not affect plans to open the Bloomingdale’s at the former site of a Mervyn’s, which closed down when that chain went bankrupt in 2008. The 120,000-square-foot store will employ 175 workers and will join a Macy’s already at the Galleria. A Nordstrom department store also anchors the large regional mall. The retailer said it plans to close six Macy’s stores early this spring, including an outlet at the Paseo Colorado in Pasadena that opened in 1980. After the store closures, the company will operate 798 Macy’s in 45 states and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. Bloomingdale’s will have 37 full stores and 13 smaller outlets. Shares of Macy’s lost 84 cents, or more than 2 percent, to close at $37.47 on the New York Stock Exchange.
