Northrop Makes Staff Cuts in Woodland Hills

Northrop Grumman Corp. is offering buyouts to employees at its Navigation Systems facility in Woodland Hills as a response to Pentagon budget cuts and economic uncertainties. The Falls Church, Va.-based defense and aerospace contractor is seeking to reduce staff by 200 workers in Woodland Hills and Salt Lake City. If not enough employees take buyouts, Northrop plans to begin layoffs early next year. “It is imperative that the company properly adjusts the staffing levels at these campuses to accommodate anticipated business needs going forward,” said spokeswoman Gina Piellusch, in a prepared statement. The Woodland Hills and Salt Lake City facilities are part of the Navigation Systems division, which does research, development and manufacturing of gyroscopes, high-powered computers and components for aircraft cockpits and space applications. About 1,300 people work in the San Fernando Valley location, which serves as the Navigation Systems headquarters. The staff cuts are regrettable but unavoidable to reduce costs, Piellusch said. “These reductions are in response to continuing economic uncertainties and defense budget cuts and are critical to continued business success in the increasingly competitive aerospace and defense industry,” she said. In May 2011, Northrop laid off 71 workers in Woodland Hills due to delays and cancellation in domestic and international contracts.
