Valley Presbyterian Performs Its First Single-Port Appendectomy

Surgeons at Valley Presbyterian Hospital recently performed the hospital’s first single-port laparoscopic appendectomy. The minimally invasive surgical procedure requires just one incision for removing an infected appendix—typically through the patient’s navel—reducing scarring and healing time. Gustavo Valdespino, CEO and president of VPH, said appendectomies are one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the U.S. A traditional multi-port laparoscopic appendectomy typically requires three small incisions. Dr. Samuel Kashani, an expert in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques, performed the procedure at VPH. He also performed a single-port laparoscopic gall bladder-removal surgery for a patient with gall stones. “Very few physicians and very few hospitals in the Los Angeles area can offer single-port laparoscopic surgeries,” said Dr. Michael Zadeh, who also recently completed a single-port appendectomy at VPH. “Valley Presbyterian Hospital is unique in having two physicians who can perform this minimally invasive procedure.” Glendale Adventist Medical Center also performs the relatively new procedure.
