Mayor Marsha McLean and Mayor Pro-tem Laurie Ender Read to Youth

This is a regular feature on philanthropic activities by Valley-area business people and companies. On September 28, Santa Clarita’s Mayor Marsha McLean and Mayor Pro-tem Laurie Ender volunteered at Granada Villa Mobile Home Park in Canyon Country. Mayor McLean and Mayor Pro-tem Ender assisted Granada Villa Neighborhood Committee members in their after-school reading and tutoring program. Students had the opportunity to read with the city officials in the park’s Community Room. The Granada Villa Neighborhood Committee was formed two years ago in partnership with the city’s Anti-Gang Task Force to provide free community services and classes to adults, youth, and high-risk teens in the area. Advertising company lends resources to foster family campaign Inter/Media Advertising recently announced they will be helping San Diego-based Angels Foster Family Network with a campaign to recruit foster families for children up to five years old. The campaign focuses on raising awareness about the need for foster families. Rancho Santa Fe Women’s Fund has also signed on to support Angels in the form of a grant that will partially fund the campaign. The advertising and marketing organization will lend their resources and media connections to the campaign, which will include a 30-second TV spot and 60-second radio commercials. Robert Yallen, CEO of the Encino-based Inter/Media Group of Companies, said it has been “truly gratifying” to lend the company’s talents to the organization. “In addition to traditional media buys, we have pushed our media partners through our leveraged PR to gain more added-value venues of exposure,” Yallen said. “Angels Foster Family Network is making a difference in the lives of children who deserve a head start, and we are pleased to be able to help open those doors.” Glendale Hospital hosts Free Drive Thru Clinic On Oct. 15, Glendale Memorial Hospital will offer a free Drive Thru Flu Clinic in the Glendale Memorial parking structure for anyone 55 years or older. The service is also provided to anyone suffering from health problems requiring immunization from the flu. The clinic will run from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. Kaiser Permanente performs free surgeries Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center offered free surgeries to selected uninsured Valley residents late last month in celebration of the first “Community Surgery Day.” Qualifying patients had an income at or below 300 percent of the federal poverty guidelines and did not qualify for public health assistance. The hospital partnered with Valley Community Clinic to provide hernia surgeries on Sept. 24. Dennis Benton, Panorama City Hospital executive director, said the surgeries were made possible by the more than 50 Kaiser Permanente physicians and staff that participated in the event. “Kaiser Permanente has a social mission to improve the health of the communities in which we live and work,” Benton said. Dole donates 270,000 Fruit Bowls during nationwide Road Trip Last month, Dole concluded its “DOLE Fruit Bowls Across America Road Trip.” The Road Trip, which partnered the company with Feeding America resulted in the donation of more than 270,000 Fruit Bowls to national hunger relief organization, Feeding America. The five and a half week trip commenced in New York City on June 28 and included 12 stops in cities across the country. Boston, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles were some of the cities visited. While on the road, the Westlake Village-based company offered consumers free samples of its new Fruit Bowls in 100 percent juice. The Road Trip also included an online component through Dole’s Facebook page. For every visitor who tested the product, Dole donated Fruit Bowls to a local Feeding America Food Bank. – Compiled by Angela Melero
