EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This is the first year the Business Journal has compiled a List of senior active living facilities in the greater Valley area. These retirement communities meet the needs of those 55 and older who do not need assisted living services. Some are privately held apartment complexes while others are independent living wings of larger assisted living facilities. Besides offering conventional apartment amenities, these locations also provide tenants with a selection of community activities to choose from. National senior living companies such as Senior Resource Management and MBK Senior Living operate a total of 4 facilities in the region. – By Josh Dausch THE PACESETTER The largest active living facility in the area is University Village Thousand Oaks, owned and operated by Carlsbad-based Continuing Life Communities and located across from California Lutheran University’s campus. The facility exclusively offers independent living services with a total of 367 apartments on the property and a capacity of over 500 senior tenants. Opened in 2007, University Village sits on 60 acres of park-like preserve and costs an average of $6,000 per month depending on personal needs.
