Encino Chamber of Commerce: The Encino Chamber of Commerce participated in a QuakeSmart community forum Sept. 15 through a partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The QuakeSmart program was developed by FEMA around the premise that no community can fully recover from a damaging earthquake until its businesses are back up and running. Because local businesses are not as prepared to resume commercial activity compared to national organizations, getting them to mitigate for earthquake loss has become an economic priority. The program’s mission is to encourage at-risk businesses to become “QuakeSmart” and maintain on-going earthquake hazard mitigation efforts throughout the year. “The Encino Chamber of Commerce is pleased to partner with FEMA to bring this vital information to our members,” said Diana Donovan, CEO of the Encino Chamber of Commerce. “With September being National Preparedness Month, we consider this topic timely and very valuable.” “The Big Shaker” mobile earthquake simulator was on the premises to give attendees the opportunity to feel what it’s like to be in a real earthquake. On Sunday, October 11, the oldest annual food festival in Los Angeles will celebrate its 22nd anniversary. The Taste of Encino, held on Ventura Boulevard at the corner of Balboa Boulevard in Encino will once again fill the street with 10,000 people searching for a great time. The Taste of Encino began in 1988, as a way for the Encino Chamber of Commerce (www.EncinoChamber.org) to highlight its many restaurant members. It was a one-day affair with 12 restaurants and was held at a local shopping center. The Chamber sold soda as a fundraiser and a tradition began. Now the event includes arts and crafts, local business presentations, a Wellness Pavillion, a beverage garden, and for the first time, Emergency Preparedness exhibits. KSA Management will provide entertainment in the beverage garden. Attendees will also enjoy four stages of entertainment provided by California Traditional Music Society (www.ctmsfolkmusic.org ). CTMS will fill the day with Folk and Bluegrass music and dance performances in addition to other acts that relate to the folk arts of America’s diverse cultural heritage. The Taste of Encino is provided to the community free by the Encino Chamber of Commerce. For more information, please contact the Chamber office at (818) 789-4711 or visit our website at www.tasteofencino.org. Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce: The San Fernando Valley Business Watch is a free program for businesses sponsored by the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. There is a meeting October 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (registration and check-in begins at 5:30 p.m.) at the Hampton Inn in Van Nuys. The Hampton Inn is located at 5638 Sepulveda Blvd. just north of Burbank Blvd. This month’s meeting will help businesses comply with new Federal Red Flag Rules which deal with information-handling practices and protecting customers’ privacy. The Federal Trade Commission has extended the Red Flag Rules compliance deadline to November 1, 2009, which gives business owners and managers the opportunity to attend the October 1 Business Watch and find out if they need to comply. What is the Red Flag Rule? The Red Flag Rule requires many businesses and organizations to implement a written Identity Theft Prevention Program designed to detect warning signs – or “red flags” – of identity theft in their day-to-day operations. By attending the Business Watch you will find out if the Red Flag Rule applies to your business or organization. Get practical tips on spotting red flags of identity theft. Business Watch is free and open to all business owners and managers in the San Fernando Valley. To attend the October 1 Business Watch meeting on Identity Theft and Red Flag Rules, please RSVP to the Greater san Fernando chamber at (818) 989-0300.
