Warner Bros. Cancels Canadian Screenings to Fight Piracy

Warner Bros. Pictures cancelled all screenings of its films in Canada to prevent pirating of the films through the use of camcorders, the company announced Wednesday. The policy will be implemented with the studio’s next release, “Ocean’s Thirteen,” and be in effect for all films thereafter from Warner Independent Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures. Warner Bros. Pictures Domestic President Dan Fellman said it was a regretful decision to cancel the promotional and word-of-mouth screenings but it was a necessary step to prevent pirating and protect the studio’s films. Canada has not adopted a law making camcording illegal or permitting the confiscation of equipment, and, as a result, has become the main source for most of the world’s piracy, Warner Bros. said in a release. In the U.S., 37 states the District of Columbia enacted laws against recording films with camcorders. “We’ve been working with the [Canadian] exhibitors to encourage the government to put additional measures in place to deter and stop camcording,” Fellman said.
