Amgen Drug Increases Leukemia Risk for Some Patients

Researchers from Columbia University have found a drug developed by Thousand Oaks biotech company Amgen increased the risk of blood cancer in some breast cancer patients. The study found that almost 2 percent of patients taking Amgen’s Neupogen had an elevated risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome versus those that did not take the drug. However, some analysts who reviewed the report said it was flawed because it tested only women over 65 and did not account for the impact of chemotherapy or other radiation therapies. The results were first published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
