CSUN Going to Virtual Classes, Others Mulling Options

Updated March 12 In response to the spreading coronavirus, some Valley area schools are going to virtual classes. California State University – Northridge is canceling all face-to-face classes beginning Thursday. It will launch virtual classrooms on March 23, after spring break. CSUN plans to continue holding online classes through April 19; campus operations and housing will remain open. CSU Channel Islands is also opting for online instruction after its spring break, according to a statement from the school late Wednesday. Harvard-Westlake School, which has a campus in Studio City, is canceling classes and all activities beginning Thursday. Online classes will begin Monday. “I know that our faculty will be working diligently to continue the same high-quality educational experience — just in a different format,” Dianne Harrison, president of CSUN, said in a statement directed at students. “Expect that your faculty will be communicating with you the details on this transition. For those who live on campus, student housing will remain open and operational.” Students participating in field placements off campus will be advised by instructors of any changes, the university said in its statement. California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks posted early Thursday that they have decided to begin transitioning to a social-distance plan starting Friday, with full implementation on Monday. The university plans to follow this policy through April 5. Some events for incoming freshmen students, including Admitted Student Day on April 18 and overnight programs mid-April, have been canceled. Chaminade College Preparatory is following a similar plan of opting for online instruction starting Tuesday. Friday and Monday will be “pupil-free days” to prep staff for online instruction. “With our current IT infrastructure, learning platform and teacher/student readiness, we are well-positioned to move to online delivery temporarily,” Chaminade said on its website. The school has started canceling campus events, including Lenten prayer service on Thursday, course counseling nights on Thursday and Tuesday, and a guest speaker event that was slated for March 24. Chaminade’s Gala Benefit and Auction is still set to take place on Saturday.
