Providence Funds Health Care at ‘Project Roomkey’ Hotels

Tarzana Treatment Centers, the Center for Family Health and Education and the Northeast Valley Health Corp. have received grants to provide health care services at Los Angeles County hotels participating in Project Roomkey, the county’s initiative to temporarily house homeless people in vacant hotel rooms during the pandemic. The three Valley organizations are among 16 medical providers awarded grants to provide health care to Project Roomkey sites, interim shelters, and other street-based services. The Center for Family Health and Education is located in Panorama City. The Northeast Valley Health Corp. has locations in Sun Valley, Van Nuys and Pacoima. The grants come from a $1 million donation from Providence Southern California to the California Community Foundation, an organization for the nonprofit sector, which distributed grants to the providers. Providence operates three Valley hospitals: Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana and Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. The Foundation declined to disclose which hotels will host medical providers. Providence and the Community Foundation are members of the Health Pathways Group, a coalition designed to increase access to health care during the pandemic. Other member organizations include United Way of Greater Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Health System, L.A. Care Health Plan and the UniHealth Foundation. “The goal of this team is to develop a long-term solution,” Providence Holy Cross Chief Executive Bernard Klein said in a statement. “Together, we want to build a sustainable system of wrap-around services at temporary housing sites for those in our communities who have no permanent home. We are fortunate to have partners that share our commitment to reach out to those who are poor and vulnerable.” The donation follows a previous gift from Providence of $1 million to help increase COVID-19 surge capacity at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center and LAC+USC Medical Center.
