LegalForce, LegalZoom Settle Suit

Glendale-based legal filing website LegalZoom has settled a trademark and antitrust lawsuit filed by its competitor LegalForce RAPC Worldwide, based in Silicon Valley, according to a statement from the company. Financial details of the settlement were not announced by either entity. LegalForce founder Raj Abhyanker originally filed a $60 million antitrust lawsuit against LegalZoom in 2017, according to an article by Law360. Abhyanker was forced to move the case out of arbitration because LegalForce could no longer afford to pay arbitration fees. LegalForce, operator of trademark and patent filing service Trademarkia.com, sued LegalZoom for allegedly acquiring the domain name LegalZoomTrademarkia.com, which directed users to LegalZoom’s main site. “As is clear from the tiny fraction of cases that ever make it to trial, sometimes the economically rational decision is to settle even when you’re confident you would prevail in the end,” said Ken Friedman, LegalZoom general counsel, in the Law360 article.
