‘The Orville’ Takes Home Hardware

FuseFX came away a winner at the Hollywood Professional Association’s annual awards show last month. The Van Nuys post-production house won for its work on the Fox series “The Orville.” Tommy Tran, a visual effects supervisor who worked on the winning episode, “Identity: Part II,” said in a statement posted at the FuseFX website that it was an honor to be recognized by the Burbank-based association. Key to the win was an 8-minute battle sequence during the episode. “I hope that everyone at our studio stands proud that we pulled off such an amazing feat,” Tran said. The FuseFX team of Tran, digital effects supervisor JV Pike and Kevin Lingenfelser, also a visual effects supervisor, were joined on stage to receive the award with Brooke Noska and Brandon Fayette, both visual effects supervisors at 21st Century Fox. “This award shows that all the hours, all the work done by all the VFX artisans, was not overlooked,” Pike said in a statement. “Without them, this couldn’t be possible.” The FuseFX team beat out four other shows in the Outstanding Visual Effects – episodic television of more than 13 episodes. The others included co-workers from FuseFX – Jon Massey, Tony Pizadeh, Brigitte Bourque, Gavin Whelan and Kwon Choi – nominated for their work on “9-1-1,” also airing on Fox. FuseFX will continue working on “The Orville” in its third season, Tran said. “It’s going to be a year-long voyage for us into the depths of Seth MacFarlane’s vivid imagination,” he said in his statement. “I can’t wait for what is ahead for myself, the team and FuseFX.” The Hollywood Professional Association’s 14th annual awards show took place Nov. 21 at the Skirball Cultural Center. The awards recognize creative achievement and engineering excellence in editing, color grading, sound and visual effects in feature films, television and commercials. In addition to the four creative categories the association also gives an Engineering Excellence Award, a Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation and the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award. Other projects picking up awards included “Game of Thrones,” the live action “Lion King,” “Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse,” “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and “Stranger Things.”
