Campaign Paints Nails as Patriotic

OPI Products Inc. will launch a new fall and winter collection this month inspired by Washington – both our nation’s capital and the actress Kerry Washington, that is. The new line includes vibrant shades and classic fall hues, in addition to some fairly unorthodox and rather patriotic names. Take, for example, the nearly-nude “Pale to the Chief” pink or the bright “Freedom of Peach” polishes. “It’s a real art and science to develop color that will appeal to women of all types and skin tones,” Washington said in a statement. “Nail color is a small but impactful form of individual expression. Wearing bold shades like these is empowering and uplifting, not to mention a perfect way to show some election year spirit.” The Emmy and Golden Global nominated actress is this year’s creative ambassador for the brand. Washington stars as a crisis management professional working in Washington, D.C. in her current show “Scandal,” which positions her perfectly to promote a patriotic and girl power-themed collection. Other celebrity endorsements include Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. OPI, the nail care company in North Hollywood, is owned by beauty and wellness giant Coty Inc. in New York. Washington worked alongside OPI Co-Founder Suzi Weiss-Fischmann to name and develop the OPI Washington DC collection. The line includes 12 permanent colors and three limited-edition shades in both Nail Lacquer and GelColor formulas. Additional polishes in the collection include a dusky blue called “CIA = Color Is Awesome,” an almost beige “We the Female” and a bold red shade of “Madame President.” “OPI has a long standing reputation for creating innovative, quality nail lacquers. From Gwen Stefani and Selena Gomez to now Kerry Washington, OPI is also well-known for using celebrities in the news and creating collections through collaborative efforts that represent those celebs,” Daniela Ciocan, marketing director of Cosmoprof North America – a beauty trade show in Henderson, Nev., said in an email to the Business Journal. “They also create cool names that are evocative of places or emotions – ‘Lincoln Park After Dark,’ as an example, is one of their edgiest and most popular shades associated with the famed Chicago Park.” The Washington- D.C. themed collection will launch in August and will retail for $10. Once launched, the OPI Washington DC nail lacquers will be available for purchase at professional salons and retailers including Ulta, Regis, Dillard’s and Chatters – in addition to online. “Kerry is a role model, style icon, nail lacquer lover and absolute natural in this new role,” Weiss-Fischmann said in a statement. “She exemplifies the spirit of Washington, D.C. women.” – Champaign Williams
