Medtronic Launches Phone Connection for Diabetics

Medical device company Medtronic plc announced Monday that its MiniMed Connect system will be available for sale in the U.S. MiniMed Connect is the only product that allows people with diabetes to view their insulin pump and monitor their glucose with an iPhone app. Doctors and clinics also can view this information from CareLink Personal, Medtronic’s therapy management software, and can receive text notifications when the person with diabetes has abnormal sugar levels. Medtronic is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, but its diabetes division is located in Northridge. The company’s strategy with MiniMed Connect is to move beyond insulin pumps and glucose devices into more integrated systems of care. “Effective management of diabetes requires an engaged team of participants, and MiniMed Connect serves to inform and involve people with diabetes, their loved ones and their health care professionals,” Medtronic’s President of Diabetes Service and Solutions Annette Bruls said in a statement. “Safe and secure sharing of critical diabetes data is an important step for Medtronic as we transform into a holistic diabetes management company.” The app is currently compatible with iOS devices, but Medtronic is working with Samsung to create an app for Android devices.
