Ramsay, Ryu Top District 4 Primary

The Los Angeles City Clerk’s office confirmed that Carolyn Ramsay and David Ryu – two business-backed candidates – received the most votes in the March 3 primary to fill the seat representing L.A. City Council District 4. After the count of mail-in ballots and votes cast at polling places was completed on Thursday, Ramsay’s total amounted to 15.3 percent of the vote while Ryu had 14.6 percent. Less than 200 votes separated Ryu from the next candidate, Tomas O’Grady, co-founder of non-profit EnrichLA, who received 14 percent of the vote. A field of 14 candidates sought to replace termed-out Councilman Tom LaBonge. Ramsay and Ryu now will face off in the May 19 general election to represent the district, which stretches from the Miracle Mile to Sherman Oaks Ramsay had been LaBonge’s chief of staff and Ryu is an executive with Kedren Acute Psychiatric Hospital and Community Health Center, an L.A. non-profit health provider. They were among four “preferred” candidates in the race chosen by BizFedPAC, a political action committee affiliated with the Los Angeles County Business Federation, also known as BizFed. Less than 10 percent, or about 217,835, of 2.3 million registered voters cast ballots in the primary for City Council, Los Angeles Unified School District and Community College District members. However, it is hoped that voter participation will rise due to the passage of two ballot measures on March 3 that will move city and school board elections to even-numbered years to coincide with presidential and gubernatorial races.
