Machinima Lays Off 10 Percent of Staff

Machinima, an online gamer network backed by Warner Bros., has laid off 13 full-time employees, about 10 percent of its staff, in an effort to “focus its resources on high-growth opportunities,” the company said in a statement. “Machinima released 13 production staff associated with Respawn, TFTW and certain shows on Machinima LIVE as this content was simply not delivering the monetization that supports our path to profitability,” the statement read. The West Hollywood company, which the Burbank studio has heavily invested in, has seen several rounds of layoffs, including as recently as March when it let go 42 employees, or 30 percent of its staff. It also laid off staff in late 2012 and again in September 2013. The company said it is now hiring positions in programming, talent development and marketing. The company employed 115 people as of November. The news comes just after the company’s announcement last week of $24 million in new funding led by Warner Bros. Existing investors Redpoint Ventures, MK Capital, Coffin Capital and Machinima founder Allen DeBevoise also participated. Machinima has more than 170 million monthly viewers and 3.7 billion monthly views. Company officials did not respond to a request for comment.
