Business Boom Brings Booster Move

The Valley Industry and Commerce Association will relocate its offices to Van Nuys early next month, with the nonprofit business advocacy group citing a lack of space and parking for its meetings at its current home. VICA will leave its longtime headquarters at 5121 Van Nuys Blvd. in Sherman Oaks for a building in the 16600 block of Sherman Way, not far from Van Nuys Airport. VICA President Stuart Waldman said the group will get about 1,300 additional square feet compared with its current office. The main conference room will have seating for 60 people, in addition to a separate kitchen, work room and individual offices for the staff. There’s plenty of parking, too. “There is nothing worse than seeing someone walk three blocks in the rain to a VICA meeting because there is no parking,” Waldman said. VICA has been in the Sherman Oaks building for more than a dozen years. The three-story structure also houses the Valley Economic Alliance, a business attraction and retention organization, and the Valley Economic Development Center, a nonprofit lender and small-business training organization. Since 2008, VICA said that its membership has grown about 40 percent. That has resulted in more people coming to meetings; the association hosts about five of them a month. The current conference room seats only 32 people. One recent meeting had 48 people in attendance, said Waldman. “We are a victim of our success,” he added. The move will take place early next month with a grand opening set for later. VICA bought furniture, a refrigerator and other items for the new space. To offset the cost, it is selling sponsorships that include signage with a company’s name. The sponsorship for the large conference room starts at $35,000 with the staff offices and a work room costing $2,500. Leavitt Group Insurance, a national firm with local offices in Woodland Hills, has signed up to sponsor a small conference room, while Pacific Federal, a Glendale insurance firm, will sponsor the reception area. – Mark R.
