Simi Approves Five-Star Resort

The Simi Valley City Council unanimously approved plans this week for the Hummingbird Nest Ranch to become a five-star resort. The expansion and renovation proposal for the 2940 Kuehner Drive hotel includes a 105-room-hotel, 98 cottages, a conference center, outdoor event venues, a wellness center, restaurants and tennis courts, as well as equestrian and spa facilities. The developer is property owner Five S Properties Ltd. “The project would provide a unique and attractive tourism destination for Simi Valley,” stated City Manager Eric Levitt in an April 28 staff report recommending the proposal. The vote was delayed from February due to concerns by the adjacent property owner about the environmental impact, including traffic, air quality and noise, among other issues. Those concerns were addressed by the developer, who responded with a letter to property owner Pinehurst LLC. Leigh Nixon, chief executive of the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, said the project would be a welcome addition to a community that only has about 260 top-quality hotel rooms. “Currently we do not have that hotel category, so it will be welcomed for those visitors that want that type of seclusion. Plus, it will bring a much needed event and meeting hall that will hold 500,” she said. Nixon also said the Hummingbird’s expansion will help promote the area, something the business community and city are working on now through a plan to start a tourism business improvement district. “They will also be a partner in it to help generate revenue to help market themselves along with all the other hotels, and with them in the mix, we will be able to offer a variety of lodging choices,” she said.
