Prizes Come to Business Journal

The San Fernando Valley Business Journal won first place in two categories at the 2014 SoCal Journalism Awards, presented June 29 by the Los Angeles Press Club. In the under 50,000 circulation division, the Business Journal’s design director, Robert Landry, won first place in design for the cover story “Model Millennials,” published in the Nov. 25 issue. The package presented the stories of 13 young entrepreneurs. Staff Reporter Elliot Golan won for first place in the business story category with “Sour Dough,” a profile of a bakery partnership that went bad. It was published in the May 27, 2013 issue. The judges said the story “stood out because it was unique and had good reporting and structure.” Staff Reporter Mark Madler placed second in two separate categories. “Public Enemy No. 1,” a story about AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s Michael Weinstein and his campaign to mandate condoms in adult films, came in second for personality profile. It appeared on the cover of the April 13, 2013 edition. Madler’s “Byte-Sized Revolution,” about the transition to digital technology in the post-production sector of the film industry, placed second in the entertainment feature category. It was published in the May 27, 2013 issue. The Business Journal’s sister publication, Los Angeles Business Journal, also won several L.A. Press Club Awards. Among them: Reporter Alfred Lee won Journalist of the Year in the under 50,000 circulation category, and Chief Editorial Photographer Ringo Chiu won Photojournalist of the Year.
