NBCUniversal Laying Off 164 in Burbank

The move of “The Tonight Show” to New York City will result in the elimination of 164 positions at NBCUniversal’s Burbank studio. The New York-based network notified the state Employment Development Department last month the workers would be laid off starting Feb. 14. The phase out will continue into April, according to media reports. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification did not specify what positions were being cut but the Burbank Leader reported they were production-based jobs. “The Tonight Show,” broadcast from Burbank since 1972, ends its run there on Feb. 6 with the retirement of host Jay Leno. Jimmy Fallon will take over hosting duties from New York City on Feb. 17. NBC is banking that Fallon, 39, who is nearly a quarter century younger than Leno, will be able to revitalize the show. Fallon currently hosts “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” which airs on NBC following “The Tonight Show.” The loss of “The Tonight Show” is another hit to the 34-acre former NBC Studios campus on Alameda Avenue. NBC sold the buildings in 2007 to a private developer and the network has gradually moved its operations from the site to nearby Universal City. News station NBC4 is expected to vacate the campus in February. A new tenant, the iHeartRadio Theatre, a live-musical venue, moved in last year, taking up some of the vacant space at the facility, now dubbed The Burbank Studios.
