Disney Goes Bollywood

Walt Disney Co. is going into India to make three Bollywood films in the next two years, according to media reports Thursday. The move comes a year after the Burbank media giant acquired a controlling stake in UTV Software Communications Ltd., one of India’s largest media and entertainment firms. The three films in the works include two comedies, “PK” and “Jagga Jasoos,” and a sequel to a highly successful 3-D dance film that will be called “ABCD2,” for Any Body Can Dance. Though Disney has been operating with UTV in India for several years, these will be the first releases under the Disney label. The films will be produced in India and the United States. Disney’s involvement with UTV dates back to 2006, when the studio took a 15 percent equity stake. The stake grew slowly until its $454 million acquisition in February last year. Shares of Disney gained 79 cents, or 1.2 percent, to close Thursday at $65.24 on the New York Stock Exchange.
