Galpin Highlights History at L.A. Auto Show

Galpin Auto Sports is spotlighting historical involvement with tricked-out cars and trucks at the L.A. Auto Show taking place this week at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The North Hills-based vehicle customization outfit, a part of Galpin Motors, is featuring more than a dozen vehicles in its exhibit on the lower level of the convention center. Elsewhere at the auto show, Galpin is displaying its new Galpin GTR1 supercar and a handful of luxurious models from British carmaker Aston-Martin. Having a presence at the auto show is the best way for Galpin Auto Sports to highlight the talent it has for customizing cars, trucks and vans, said its president, Beau Boeckmann. “If people are not coming to Galpin, this is bringing Galpin to them,” Boeckmann said. Among the vehicles on display are the Backup Pickup, a 1966 truck designed to do wheelies while in reverse; the hot rod Iron Orchid, a 1934 Ford five-window coupe; the Mach IV, a four-engine Mustang dragster, and a life-sized Tonka truck. The Galpin GTR1 is the first supercar the dealership has produced. The $1 million-plus vehicle, capable of traveling up to 180 miles an hour, is Galpin’s take on what the GT sports car would have evolved into had Ford continued to make them after 2006. The auto show is the second time the public has gotten a look at the car. “After the show we will do real world testing and really heat it up,” Boeckmann said. The L.A. Auto Show runs until Dec. 1.
