Hertzberg to Seek Public Office Again

Nearly a decade after falling short in his 2005 bid to become the mayor of Los Angeles, former Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg has announced his intention to return to public office. The former Valley assemblyman will run for the 20th state Senate district, when current office holder Alex Padilla vacates the seat to run for Secretary of State. Padilla is expected to back Hertzberg. The district covers most of the San Fernando Valley with the exception of Chatsworth and other northwest communities. The Democrat was elected in 1996 to the Valley’s 40th Assembly District and was speaker of the Assembly from 2000 to 2002, when he departed public office. Since then the 58-year-old has been a partner in L.A. law firm Mayer Brown LLP, has worked in venture capital and been an investor in several alternative energy companies. In the announcement on his Facebook page, Hertzberg quipped about the time he has spent out of politics. “I am not as young as I was when I started in elected office, but I think I am wiser and as motivated as I have ever felt,” he wrote. The primary election will take place in June 2014, with the general election to follow in November.
