Valley Business Interests Oppose Airport Curfew

Business and aviation interests in the San Fernando Valley are organizing their response to legislation proposed by two federal lawmakers for mandatory curfews at Van Nuys and Burbank Bob Hope airports. The Valley Industry & Commerce Association has already sent a letter to Rep. Tony Cardenas, D-Arleta, expressing its opposition to the pending legislation introduced days earlier by Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, and Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks. The Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act would allow Van Nuys and Bob Hope to set mandatory curfews between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Both airports currently have voluntary curfews during those hours. VICA has opposed the curfew measure the other times it has been brought up in Congress, said President Stuart Waldman. “The problem with mandating a curfew is there are times when flights need to come late when delayed for weather and a voluntary fly friendly program allows that flexibility,” he said. Aviation consultant Bob Rodine, of the Polaris Group in Sherman Oaks, is working behind the scenes to get other business aviation interests involved in opposing the curfew. Rodine said he is also putting together an analysis of the economic impact a curfew would have on the airports.
