Charter Service Takes Off at Burbank Airport

Surf Air, a private subscription private charter service, began flights this week from Burbank’s Bob Hope Airport. The airline ties the Los Angeles area with the Bay Area, with Santa Barbara to be added in July. Plans are for Surf Air to add service to Monterey, Palm Springs, San Diego, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe and then other states. Passengers can fly an unlimited number of times aboard a Pilatus PC-12 single engine turboprop for a monthly fee starting at $1,650,. The airline markets itself toward business travelers. It’s first flight was on Wednesday. Surf Air co-founder and Chief Executive Wade Eyerly called the subscription mode a groundbreaking alternative for air travel. “We’ve put together a team of industry-leading pilots and created a first-class, membership based air service that is like nothing else available in the market,” said Eyerly, in a prepared statement. Surf Air had originally planned to base its operations at Santa Monica Airport but there is strong community opposition to more flights out of the airfield. Investors in Surf Air include Los Angeles real estate developer Rick Caruso, tech entrepreneur Jeffrey Stibel, and private equity firms TriplePoint Capital, of Menlo Park; Siemer Ventures, of Santa Monica.; and Baroda Ventures LLC, of Beverly Hills. This is the second new airline to begin service out of Bob Hope in recent months. On May 1, SeaPort Airlines Inc. began service between the Burbank airfield and the Imperial Valley Centro using a nine-passenger seat Cessna Caravan.
