Runway Repair Project Begins at Van Nuys Airport

Construction began on Wednesday on a $14 million repair project on the main runway at the Van Nuys Airport. The work started with the demolition of two blast fences at the north end of the airfield and excavating nearby water lines. The work was expected to take several days to complete. The project will refurbish the 8,000-foot main runway to improve safety through a combination of total pavement reconstruction in some sections while others will receive an asphalt overlay. The runway’s shoulders will be widened to meet current Federal Aviation Administration standards. “The main work will begin in April provided that everything stays on schedule,” said airport spokesperson Diana Sanchez. When the center section of the runway is worked on later in the summer, it will require closing it for 10 days. The project is expected to be completed by August.
