40 Under 40, Kim

Carol Kim, 38 Manager of Corporate Communications, Health Net Carol Kim, manager of corporate communications for Woodland Hills-based Health Net Inc., represents one of the nation’s largest managed health care companies. Kim, 38, also is charged with spearheading an enterprise-wide initiative to increase the company’s Hispanic market share. She was the former health care advisor to Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, policy advisor to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and senior advisor to the assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury. Kim says her public policy experience informs her new role in the private sector. “My extensive experience as a public policy and community leader brings a distinct perspective to private industry,” said Kim, who joined Health Net in 2010. “I understand the nuance of public policy and its potential impact on businesses, especially those in highly regulated industries like health plans.” She says these skills also have helped her to increase Hispanic engagement for Health Net. “When launching Health Net’s Latino Initiative, I rotated through the company and developed a working knowledge of our operations enterprise-wide,” Kim said. “This allowed the development of an end-to-end Latino market strategy.” She notes that change is constant in every industry, and professionals would do well to recognize that. “You need the ability to see how the world is changing, adapt to it, and execute on a path forward to remain relevant because what you know now about your work or industry may be vastly different in five or 10 years.”
