Live TV on Princess Cruises

Live from somewhere in the Caribbean…. Princess Cruises will unveil a totally new entertainment venue on board its newest cruise ship: live television. The Royal Princess, expected to make its debut in June 2013, will feature a first-of-its kind television studio with seating for 280 guests, who will be able to view and participate in daily live broadcasts, the Santa Clarita company said. Princess currently airs a daily “Wake Show” hosted by the cruise director that informs passengers about daily activities and other important information. But it hasn’t been live. The new studio will serve as the venue for a revamped version of the show, which will for the first time feature a live audience. The Princess Live! studio also will host live game shows, interactive cooking shows, enrichment classes, murder mysteries, trivia, and “Meet the Experts” presentations from the crew, the company said. The studio will also show art house films and will serve as a more intimate venue for onboard musicians who will offer “unplugged” and “in-the-round” shows. “Not only will (audiences) enjoy the high energy of being part of a live television production, but they also will have a new opportunity to see more intimate performances from many of our onboard entertainers,” said Jan Swartz, executive vice president. Guests today have access to a multitude of television channels when cruising, from CNN to first-run movies. But this is the first time that shows will be staged live and broadcast across the ship. Adjacent to the studio, the Princess Live! CafĂ© will feature interactive, wall-mounted screens showing the ship’s position, ports of call, points of interest and even international newspapers. The 3,600-passenger Royal Princess is currently under construction. — Judy Temes
