“Puss” Highlights Q1 for DreamWorks Animation

International box office and home entertainment sales of “Puss in Boots” helped DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. increase net income by 3 percent in the first quarter. The Glendale-based animation studio reported net income of $9.1 million, or $0.11 per diluted share, on revenue of $136.1 million for the quarter ending March 31. In the same period from a year ago the company reported net income of $8.8 million, or $0.10 per diluted share, on revenue of $108 million. DreamWorks released no new film during the quarter and relied on the continued interest in “Puss in Boots”, released in theaters in November, and on home entertainment to drive revenues. The movie generated $73.6 million in revenue for the quarter through home entertainment sales and international box office. The studio’s next release is “Madagascar 3” in June. Mark R. Madler
