NTS Puts Pedal to Metal With $1 Million Contract

National Technical Systems Inc. received a $1 million contract to build a mobile scrap-metal loading machine for Advanced Steel Recovery, a recycling company. Since 2007, Calabasas-based National Technical has provided work for ASR, including the building of fixed loading machines that stay in a single location. The mobile loading machine will be completed in April and can load and ship as much as 58,000 pounds of scrap in 15 minutes, down from three hours. “Winning repeat business from a satisfied customer like ASR is also a strong indication that there is growing demand for our new services and that National Technical has proven its ability to deliver,” CEO Bill McGinnis said in a prepared statement. National Technical provides engineering and testing services for the aerospace, defense, automotive and telecommunication industries. In recent years, the company has pursued in recent years a growth strategy based on acquisitions of smaller testing firms in the U.S. National Technical will build and test the mobile scrap-metal loading machine at the New Mexico engineering services facility the company acquired in 2010. At the New Mexico site, National Technical can do both the fabrication and testing of the loader so as to get it right the first time. That is a benefit to both NTS and its client, said David Brown, general manager of the Engineering Services Group. NTS built a prototype mobile loader for ASR, based in Fontana, in 2010. The second unit improves the control systems and data gathering functions and beefs up the mechanical structure, Brown said. “Typical of product development you learn from the designing, fabricating and usage,” Brown said. “We got close on the first try and there are various things we are optimizing.” National Technical will complete the mobile loader in time for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries 2012 Annual Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas. — Mark R.
