Local Starbucks to Add Alcohol to Menu

A local Starbucks is planning to serve up more than just lattes. This month, the coffee chain’s Calabasas branch at 26531 Agoura Road applied for a beer and wine license with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The store is the second in California to apply for the permit and the first in the area to feature Starbucks’s new “evening day-part” concept. The new concept will bring an enhanced menu of food and beverage items, including premium food selections such as small plates and flat breads and a wine and beer list. After launching the concept in six locations in the Pacific Northwest region, the company announced in January plans to roll out the program in select stores in Atlanta, Chicago and Southern California. Zack Hutson, a spokesperson for Starbucks Corp., said the wine and beer menu for the Calabasas Starbucks has not been finalized, but will be tailored to reflect local taste preferences. To date, four Starbucks in Southern California have applied for liquor licenses including stores in Coronado, Huntington Beach and Rancho Santa Margarita. The company has been careful in its selection of stores to feature the new concept, Hutson said. “We want to be sure the experience matches the customer base in the neighborhoods we select.” The Calabasas Starbucks, which is about 2,000 square feet, presented the ideal size and location for this type of concept, he said, stating it’s the type of place “you can envision a customer wanting to relax and take a moment to connect with a friend.” — Angela Melero
