Provost Named as Interim President of Cal State Northridge

Harold Hellenbrand, Ph.D., provost of the California State University, Northridge, has been named as interim president of the university and will serve in the capacity until a permanent president begins at the campus. The search process for the next president of CSUN was extended for 90 days on Dec. 5 to allow for additional candidates to be included in the pool for consideration. The search began in October for a new president to succeed Jolene Koester, who is retiring on Dec. 31 after serving as president of the university since 2000. Hellenbrand was appointed as CSUN Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2004. He also served as dean and professor at the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, from 1998 to 2004, and professor at the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, from 1994 to 1998. Hellenbrand began his tenure with CSUN as a Professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino, from 1982 to 1994. Hellenbrand received his bachelor’s degree in English and American literature from Harvard College, and his doctorate in modern thought and literature from Stanford University.
