Dole Receives Award for Book on Nutrition

Dole Food Company, Inc.’s nutrition handbook received the Living Now Book Award for its promotion of healthier living, the Westlake Village company announced. Doles’ book, “Dole Nutrition Handbook: What You Need to Eat and How to Live for a Longer, Healthier Life,” received the award from the Jenkins Group, according to a statement from Dole. The group, which offers the award each year on Earth Day, gave the company the gold medal award, the top honor in the competition’s Nutrition & Diet category, the statement said. The book contains nutrition information, interviews with nutrition experts and a two-week diet and health plan. “This colorful, upbeat guide to utilizing fresh fruit and vegetables is packed with comprehensive nutrition information steeped in research – but it also manages to be accessible to the man on the street,” said Jim Barnes, managing editor and awards director of the Living Now Book awards. Dole’s eco-friendly initiatives include using biodiesels, waste reduction programs, reforestation projects and a growing line of organic produce, the statement said. The book is written by the Dole Food Company, Inc. Chairman David Murdock, according to the company’s Web site. –Jessica Selva
