CSUN Gives Awards to Alumni

A judge, an accountant and education advocate were honored on May 16 by California State University Northridge during the school’s annual Distinguished Alumni Awards. The event is designed to highlight achievements of CSUN graduates and their effect on the community. Honored were Debra Farar, who is currently a member of the board of trustees of the California State University system. She served as an educational policy and political advisor during the Clinton Administration and for former Gov. Gray Davis. Farar is a graduate of Grant High School in Van Nuys. She earned her B.A. in English in 1975 and M.A. in Childhood Education in 1987 from CSUN. Also honored was Judge James Otero of the U.S. District Court’s Central District of California. A Burbank High School graduate, Otero formerly worked for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office. He graduate magna cum laude from CSUN in 1973 and went on to earn his law degree at Stanford Law School. He also has been a judge in the L.A. Municipal and Superior Courts. The third alumnus honored was Harvey Bookstein. The 1970 graduate in business administration co-founded Roth, Bookstein & Zaslow in 1975. The Los Angeles-based accounting and consulting firm is now called RBZ LLP and has grown to 110 employees including 14 partners. Bookstein is considered an expert in real estate, tax and estate planning. He also specializes in dealing with financial issues relating to children, divorce and the development of strategies to pass family businesses from one generation to the next.
