Bob Hope Airport Proposes Transit Center

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority will study creating a $75 million regional transit center at the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. Under the proposal bus, car rental and train service would converge in a single point to link with air service at the airport. The proposed transit center would be sited along Empire Avenue, directly across from the Bob Hope Airport Train Station, which is served by Metrolink and Amtrak trains. An elevated and covered moving sidewalk would convey arriving and departing passengers between the airport terminal and the transit center, facilitating immediate access to the terminal without using shuttle buses. Public buses and rental cars would reach the center from an entrance at Hollywood Way and Avon Avenue. “With this energy-efficient solar-powered transit center in place, public transit by rail and bus becomes an efficient, convenient means to get to and from the Airport, and it will be a key step in reducing traffic congestion and air pollution on local city streets,” said Authority President Bill Wiggins. A rental car facility charge, airport passenger facility charges, airport funds, and other monies from the federal and state governments would pay for the transit center. The airport authority has retained Ricondo and Associates to conduct an initial environmental review of the project by the end of September. Mark R. Madler
