California Gas Use Down 5.1 Percent, Diesel Use Drops 8.6%

In October 2008, Californians used 67 million fewer gallons of gasoline than they did a year earlier, a decline of 5.1 percent, according to the State Board of Equalization. The average California gas price at the pump in October 2008 was $3.44 per gallon, a 10.6 percent increase from the average price in October 2007. Gasoline sold in October 2008 generated about $343 million in sales tax, an estimated $17 million more than was generated a year earlier. Diesel fuel sold for use on California roads totaled 252 million gallons in October 2008, an 8.6 percent decline. This decrease is likely rooted in the recession generating less freight movement on California roads and highways. California diesel prices were up 9.2 percent in October 2008 compared to a year earlier, when the average diesel price was $3.27.
