Here’s What We Have Planned For This Year

Lots of uncertainty out there in the business community, so I thought I’d talk about some things that are pretty certain here at the Business Journal our editorial calendar containing the special reports we’re going to run in the new year. Most of these reports are locked in and will run on the dates for which they are scheduled. If some big news event happens we’ll more than likely still have room to get everything in. In our next issue on Feb. 2, we’re going to look at the world of not-for-profit organizations. It’s a tough time for most of them. We’ll write about that but also how business and these groups work with each other and how they can perhaps work better together. We sometimes forget that without the good deeds of business both financially and through volunteer efforts, many of these organizations wouldn’t exist. That’s a new special report this year. Another new report is on human resources where we will identify the top human resources executives in the area. They will be honored at an event and profiled in a special report on March 30. HR professionals in the past several years have taken a much higher profile in companies as many new laws governing the workplace have been written and employees have become more litigious. As any manager knows, personnel issues can be the hardest part of running a business. The human resources office has been underappreciated for far too long. On May 13, we’re having our first Business Journal event in Santa Clarita where we will honor that area’s companies and businesspeople who have contributed to the fast growth of the Santa Clarita Valley economy over the years. A May 25 report will accompany that event. We’re publishing a Green Report on June 8 and our first List of Environomentally Sustainable Firms. I know that green reporting is popular these days and much of what’s written on the subject isn’t quite focused enough for me. If you’ve got ideas on what would make a really interesting and different Green Report, let me know. We’ll be focusing on biotech again this year. You may remember that we published a special magazine insert last year showcasing the efforts to nurture the biotech industry along the 101 Corridor through Ventura County. There’s lots to follow up on that. The staples of Business Journal coverage in any given year law, accounting, automotive, hospitality and tourism among many other industries will also be the subject of special reports this year. Once again, we also have events and special reports on 40 Under 40, Best Places to Work, Valley’s Top CFOs and the Fastest Growing Private Companies.
