We’re Looking for the Best Valley-Area CFOs

It’s time again to scour the greater-Valley area for the best and brightest chief financial officers. We did it last year and came up with some of the best nominees and honorees we’ve ever had for any Business Journal special report or event. So we’re trying to beat that mark by doing even better this year. On Oct. 12, our paper will publish our “Top CFOs” special report where we will profile several chief financial officers who have done outstanding things in their careers people who we consider models in their profession. The report will also give insight into the CFO position as a whole and its importance to companies of all sizes. New trends in the business world involving CFOs will also be discussed along with other news. Preceding the report will be a Business Journal event on Oct. 1 a Top CFOs luncheon where the dozens of nominees for the several awards we hope to give out will be honored. As part of the program, several of these nominees will be announced as the chosen “finalists” of the day. In the next month, we’re intensifying our search for nominees for these awards. The deadline is August 28. So through this column I am appealing to readers to formally nominate CFO professionals they feel should be considered for this honor. You also may self nominate. Here are the rules: Nominees must be in a paid, full time professional position. They must act as their company’s chief financial official even though their title may not be CFO. Nominees must spend 90 percent of their time working in the greater San Fernando Valley region, Nominees may live outside the region but must work inside the region. You also must be able to attend the luncheon. Those are the simple ground rules to be eligible. It is best if you pull down a nomination form available on our web site or by calling our researcher Brian DeWolf at (818) 316-3130 or e-mailing him at [email protected] to obtain one. He’s in charge of gathering nominations. Once people are nominated, they will be contacted by Business Journal editorial staffers and asked a series of questions. Some of the questions will focus on things such as whether the CFO has the authority to enter into binding contracts on their company’s behalf. We’ll ask things about education, professional designations, and whether the CFO has been involved in any mergers, acquisitions or major financial investments for the company. The CFO must be able to release revenues for their companies (or at least a range.) Although it is generally our preference to publish revenues of companies if we have them, we will agree in this CFO project not to publish them. But we do need them in evaluating CFO nominees. An advisory committee made up of financial professionals and others will help our editorial staff evaluate the nominees.
