Executive Summary / The Pacesetter

Executive Summary Glendale Community College and Cal State Northridge have switched places at the top of the San Fernando Valley Business Journal’s list of largest colleges and universities in the area. Glendale is No. 1 this year with 23,847 full-time equivalent students compared to CSUN’s 23,135 full-time equivalents. While both schools experienced enrollment increases over last year when CSUN was No. 1, it was Glendale’s increase of approximately 3,000 students (compared to CSUN’s approximately 2,000) that made the difference. The Business Journal’s listing of top colleges and universities is based on the number of full-time equivalent students. The Pacesetter Glendale Community College Glendale Community College has a college-credit enrollment of about 15,000 day and evening students, and approximately 10,000 others are reached through the adult education program, specialized job training programs such as JTPA and GAIN, and contract instruction administered by the Professional Development Center. It is one of 107 community colleges in 72 community college districts throughout the state. Glendale College is one of about 40 districts that are one-campus operations. These California community colleges have an enrollment of approximately 1.5 million students, and it is the largest college system in the United States. The California community colleges enroll twice as many students as all the campuses of the University of California or California State University combined. Since 1985 more than $50 million in construction has taken place on the campus in order to accommodate growing enrollments as well as modern technology. Two off-campus sites also serve the community. The Adult Community Training Center at Chevy Chase and Garfield is the headquarters for a large non-credit program, and the Professional Development Center on Honolulu Avenue in Montrose.
