Disney Renames Video Game Division

The Walt Disney Co. renamed its Buena Vista Games gaming division to Disney Interactive Studios, the company announced Thursday. Disney Interactive will publish both Disney and non-Disney branded video games for all platforms worldwide. “This change reflects our focus on creativity, the weight of the Disney content in our portfolio, and the enormous value consumers see in the Disney brand,” said Graham Hopper, the division’s senior vice president and general manager, at the company’s investor conference in Orlando, Fla. The name change comes as Disney builds nascent video game business through acquisitions and start-ups. It recently purchased Salt Lake City-based Fall Line based and last fall bought Climax Racing, a London-based creator of racing games. Buena Vista also operates Propaganda Games, a studio it launched in Vancouver, and Avalanche Software, another Salt Lake City studio the company purchased in 2005. In November, Disney officials said the company would invest up to $30 million more in 2007 in the video gaming business, an increase of 30 percent over 2006.
