Computers Given to Schools In Post-Katrina Rebuilding

This regular feature focuses on philanthropic activities by Valley-area companies and businesspeople. SADA Systems, Inc. of North Hollywood has made a donation of computers, printers and other equipment to assist with recovery efforts in Louisiana to mark the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. In conjuction with its partner, CompuTech for Humanity, the donated systems will be delivered by the Friends and Helpers Foundation, a California-based non-profit working with Care Unlimited in Louisiana. “We believe it is important to step to the aid of others in whatever way you can,” said Tony Safoian, CEO of SADA Systems, Inc., a six-year old privately held information technology consulting, outsourcing and development firm. CompuTech for Humanity is a Valley-based grassroots, charitable organization dedicated to providing computer technology access to disabled persons and low-income families. The computers are provided to needy individuals, families and organizations free of charge. The goal of this collaborative effort is to assist 12 schools in the affected area. With the assistance of SADA Systems, CompuTech for Humanity and the Friends and Helpers Foundation, the schools closed by Hurricane Katrina will be one step closer to opening their doors. Automotive Tech Grant A grant of $344,000 has been awarded to the College of the Canyons by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s office to develop and deliver an automotive technology program. “The work of automotive technicians and mechanics has evolved from mechanical repair to a high technology job”, said Audrey Green, dean of new programs and vocational training at College of the Canyons. The college feels the automotive technology program is badly needed due to a shortage of highly qualified automotive technicians. The college became eligible for the funding under an economic and workforce development program after demonstrating that it had matching funds available. The matching funds were provided through a collaboration with the Santa Clarita Valley Auto Dealers Association, the William S. Hart Union school district and College of the Canyons. Scholarship Awards North Hollywood-based OPI Nail Products Inc. has awarded $12,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors in support of OPI’s educational program. In addition to the scholarships, nearly 70 computer systems were donated to the children of OPI employees as part of its computer and scholarship giveaway held on August 31. “OPI places a tremendous value on the importance of education and has made it one of the commitments of the Schaeffer Family Foundation”, says George Schaeffer, president and CEO of OPI. The foundation is a philanthropic organization established by Schaeffer and his family. Congressman Howard Berman of the 28th District of California and Ruben Beltran of the consulado general de Mexico were special guests in attendance to offer their support of the education celebration.
