Cemex Mine Fight Goes National

The city of Santa Clarita has joined a national organization that opposes the Mexican cement company Cemex Inc. and its various mining projects. National Alliance is a group of citizens groups and government agencies from five states to fight Cemex operations. Santa Clarita for years has opposed Cemex’s plans to open a sand and gravel mine in Soledad Canyon, about a mile east of the city. The city contends the mine violates environmental regulations. Cemex plans to move forward with the mine. The company last week reported that its third quarter net income increased to $836 million, up 24 percent its largest such jump ever.
