Council Committee Delays Valley Tourism Bureau Vote

A City Council committee on Wednesday has delayed a motion to fund a designated San Fernando Valley tourism bureau. The Trade, Commerce and Tourism Committee put off voting on a proposal by Second District City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel to create a three-year pilot program that would promote the Valley independently of the rest of the city. The $600,000 program would be paid for through funds from the city’s hotel bed tax. Instead, the committee indicated that it wants L.A. Inc. to work with the San Fernando Valley Conference and Visitors Bureau a fledgling group created in 1997 by the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley to determine if the two sides can work together to promote the Valley. Greuel and others have strongly advocated that funds generated from Valley hotels stay in the Valley and be used to promote it. Currently, the taxes from hotels in the Valley are directed to a general fund, which is then used by L.A. Inc. to promote all areas of the city and the region.
