Amgen Drug May Help Heart Patients

Aranesp, an anemia drug developed by Amgen Inc., helped to improve symptoms in patients with heart failure in a small clinical trial, the company announced Monday. The results of the study were presented at the 2006 American College of Cardiology Scientific Session. This summer, Amgen will start enrolling patients in a late-stage trial to see if Aranesp can help heart-failure victims live longer. “Despite medical advantages, heart failure and its complications are a leading cause of death and hospitalization worldwide, and there remains a significant unmet medical need for effective treatments for these patients,” said Willard Dere, M.D., senior vice president for global development and chief medical officer at Amgen.
