Universal Creates Development Post

Joel Ward, a 16-year employee with Universal Studios Hollywood, has been named vice president, promotions and product development, a new position at the company. Ward will be in charge of developing programs with corporate partners, including entertainment and retail companies like grocery stores and cross promotions with fast food restaurants like Burger King. Ward will continue to oversee the development of the park’s specialty products, which include the Annual Pass Program, the “Buy and Day, Get a Year Free,” and “Front of the Line Pass” as well as the park’s “VIP Experience.” “I spent my first 10 years in operations at the theme park, which has really given me a lot of insight into guest experience and what they consider to be valuable,” said Ward. “We know they are looking for live entertainment.” To that end, Ward said, the park’s Fear Factor Live audience-participation program based on the popular reality show has been a big success, as has the set of the hit movie War of the Worlds, which was left up for park-goers. Ward said he expects to announce some new cross-promotional efforts by Universal Studios Hollywood within the coming months as he continues to develop programs that will draw more locals and visitors into the park. “My drive is still to develop new products and services for guests, I want to make sure that everyone is having an incredible experience. When they say they want something we try to provide it to them,” Ward said.
