Fernando Award Finalists Chosen By SLAV KANDYBA Staff Reporter The field of nominees for the 46th annual Fernando Award was narrowed down to five from 10, and the finalists are Jill Banks Barad, Karl Boeckmann, Dorothy Jean Jauck, J. Richard Leyner and William F. Powers Jr. They will be honored at a gala dinner on Nov. 5, when the winner will be announced. The award is given annually for outstanding community service in the San Fernando Valley. Jill Banks Barad owns Jill Barad & Associates, a public relations, fundraising and political consulting firm in Sherman Oaks. She chairs the Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils and volunteers at the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council, the Sherman Oaks and Studio City chambers of commerce, the Jewish Home for the Aging and the Valley Industry and Commerce Association. Karl Boeckmann is vice president of Galpin Motors, one of the largest auto dealerships in the region. He is involved with the Juvenile Justice Connection Project, Goodwill Industries, New Directions for Youth, Childhelp USA, the John Wayne Cancer Institute and the National Diabetes Association. Dorothy Jean Jauck is a board member of the Canoga Park/West Hills Chamber of Commerce, the Guadalupe Community Center, Canoga-Owensmouth Historical Society and Friends of the Madrid Theater. J. Richard Leyner is chairman of the Child Development Institute and the Encino Business Improvement District, board member of the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley and New Directions for Youth, and president of the Encino Neighborhood Council. William F. Powers Jr. is an attorney and businessman who has served with the Chatsworth/Porter Ranch Chamber of Commerce and United Chambers of Commerce, the Valley Cultural Center, Meet Each Need with Dignity, the Northridge-Chatsworth Rotary Club and Valley VOTE.
