NEWSMAKERS Independent Film Executive to Head Warner Unit Mark Gill has been named president of Warner Independent Pictures, a new unit of Warner Bros. Entertainment aimed at acquiring, developing and producing independent films. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that was impossible to resist,” said Gill, who joined Warner Independent from Stratus Film Co. in Los Angeles, which produced several films, including “Laws of Attraction.” Gill had served for five years as president of Miramax Pictures where he was involved in the production and acquisition of more than 25 films, including “Frida,” “In the Bedroom,” “Amelie,” and others. Gill will report to Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Production President Jeff Robinov. “I’m also looking forward to the benefits of new relationships to be forged throughout Warner Bros. Entertainment,” Gill said. With a background in marketing, Gill will oversee efforts in the acquisition, postproduction, development and marketing of independent films for the company which is headquartered on the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank. Gill will head efforts at developing director-driven films that are targeted for niche audiences rather than larger, studio-produced properties that appeal to wide audiences, the company said. The new company, which is still hiring staff, will be a lean operation with just a handful of staffers handling acquisition, marketing, public relations and business affairs. The company plans to acquire between five and 10 films per year with budgets of up to $20 million. Gill said the company plans to start releasing films by next spring. Gill’s past experience includes five years at Columbia and Tri-Star Pictures, both units of Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he served as senior vice president of marketing, and four years at Rogers & Cowan public relations firm. He began his career as a general assignment reporter for Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times. Carlos Martinez Government Commissioner Valerie Lynn Shaw has been re-elected to a third term as president of the Board of Public Works for the city of Los Angeles. Shaw was a member of the Los Angeles Civil Service Commission prior to being appointed to the board in 1996. Health Care Steve Nelson has been named chief Medicare officer for Woodland Hills-based Health Net Inc. He will be responsible for leading the firm’s national Medicare program, which includes more than 170,000 beneficiaries in California and four other states. Nelson was previously vice president, network management and chief operating officer for United Healthcare of Arizona. Manufacturing Westlake Village-based K-Swiss has named Mark L. Louie to its board of directors. He is a managing member and chief financial officer for Silicon Valley-based TechFund Capital. Service Joseph D. Russell has been elected director and chief executive officer by the PS Business Parks’ board of directors. He has been company president since September 2002 and will remain in the post. Technology Jason Carlson, president and chief operating officer at Semtech Corp., will assume the duties of chief executive officer in October. Carlson, who retains his president title, will pick up duties previously handled by Jack Poe. Poe will continue as chairman of the board of Semtech. Carlson joined the Camarillo-based company in November 2002. He is a 20-year veteran of the semiconductor industry. He also will become a member of the company’s board of directors. Chatsworth-based optical networking equipment maker Canoga Perkins has named Brett Blanke western regional sales manager. Blanke is a 10-year industry veteran and has worked with Alcatel, Chromatic Technologies and Wesco. Calbasas-based Wildcat Communications has named Julianne Younghans vice president of business development and Faisal Karim as vice president and chief information officer. Younghans had served as marketing director for Rhinotek Computer products after serving with Sierra Pacific Power. Karim had served as president and CEO of Web Marketing Consultants. Alan Amrod has been named vice president of marketing for Calabasas-based Ixia. He is a 20-year industry veteran had been head of marketing for enterprise business at Alcatel. Amrod will head Ixia’s global marketing efforts. Gene Pester has been promoted to general manager of Chatsworth-based Ellipsys Technologies. He had been technical director and chief technical officer for the company. Charles Champion has been elected chief executive officer at Woodland Hills based Youbet.com, an online wagering firm. Champion also serves as the company’s chairman. Lori Craven has been named executive vice president for global sales and marketing for Calabasas-based Tekelec. Craven previously headed up the company’s network signaling division. Monty Johnson, Tekelec’s vice president of product management and strategy for the network signaling division has been named president and general manager of the division, assuming Craven’s previous responsibilities.
