NEWSMAKERS – Pelley Named President at Glendale Memorial

NEWSMAKERS Pelley Named President at Glendale Memorial Catherine M. Pelley has been appointed president of Glendale Memorial Hospital & Health Center, a member of San Francisco-based Catholic Healthcare West. In her new position, Pelley will oversee all aspects of the 334-bed hospital’s operations and overall strategic direction. “Glendale Memorial Hospital’s reputation for high quality patient care, and the community’s high regard for the hospital as a health care partner were key factors in my decision to become president,” said Pelley. “It is the quality of the medical staff, plus the employee loyalty and dedication to the hospital that has created a reputation for patient care excellence that I wanted to be a part of.” Pelley replaces Arnold Schaffer, who left the hospital in 2002 and is now CEO of Providence Health System’s San Fernando Valley service area. Pelley previously served as president and chief executive officer at St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley, CA. Prior to that she was the chief executive officer for both Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas and Coastal Communities Hospital in Santa Ana. Pelley holds a nursing degree from Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, as well as bachelor’s in business administration and masters degree in human relations/organization development from the University of San Francisco. Pelley has held leadership roles with the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation, the Sunset Hills Children’s Foundation and the Hospitalier Health Care Board. She is past chairperson of the board of the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce. She has been named Woman of Distinction by the San Bernardino County Business Press and One of the Most Influential People in the High Desert by the Daily Press. Jacqueline Fox Entertainment Larry Kurzweil, president and chief operating officer of Universal Studios Hollywood has been chosen as the 2003 recipient of the Employee Services Management Association’s Employer of the Year Award.” Kurzweil was honored at the general session of the ESM Association’s 62nd Annual Conference and Exhibit in Orlando, Fla. May 18. Kurzweil has served in his current role at Universal since 1999. He previously held various executive level marketing positions for Olive Garden Restaurants, Baskin Robbins and Nestle Foods. Mike Richards has joined Burbank-based Dick Clark Productions Inc. as senior development executive and producer. Richards will be responsible for developing, producing and selling new programming. Richards previously produced and wrote for shows on NBC, Fox, MTV, USA Network Sci-Fi Network and Paramount. Government L.A. Mayor James Hahn has appointed Erica Kim to the Los Angeles Human Relations Commission. Kim, a private practice attorney specializing in civil and business litigation, will be responsible for support and outreach to enhance community relations in the city. Healthcare Health Net Inc. has appointed Joyce Li chief actuarial officer. Prior to joining the company, Li served as senior vice president and actuary for Thousand Oaks-based WellPoint Health Networks. HemaCare Corp. of Woodland Hills has appointed Dr. W. Andrew L. Heaton, and Terry Van Der Tuuk to its board of directors. Heaton is vice president of regulatory/scientific affairs and chief medical officer of Chiron blood testing division, an international provider of nucleic acid and immuno testing to the blood screening market. Van Der Tuuk is vice chairman of graphic technology, a barcode label company that is now a part of the Nitto Denko Corp. He is the founder and president of VanKan, Inc., a Kansas based venture capital firm. Agoura Hills-based NeoStem, a startup stem cell therapeutics research firm has named Edward Garnett, recently retired Amgen senior executive and vice president of human resources, to its Business Advisory Board. Real Estate Phillip B. Valtairo has been named chief financial officer of Younan Properties, a North Hollywood-based commercial real estate investment firm. Valtairo will be responsible for debt and equity financing, investor relations, joint ventures, acquisitions, dispositions and financial reporting. He was previously with USBX Inc., where he served as vice president and chief financial officer. Technology United Online Inc. has named Carol A. Scott, Ph.D. to its board of directors. Scott is a professor of marketing and faculty director of the Executive Program at the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA.
