VALLEY FORUM – Arnold for Governor?

VALLEY FORUM – Arnold for Governor? With the Davis recall effort gaining steam, Californians are starting to wonder if Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fiscal conservative married to a Kennedy, will indeed have a shot at becoming our next governor. Besides associating him with his action flicks, many don’t know much about the movie star’s political views, thus making him a controversial candidate. So the Business Journal asks: Do you think that Arnold Schwarzenegger is qualified to run for governor? Donald Weissman Attorney Wasserman, Comden, Casselman, Pearson LLP, Tarzana I think no. Personally, it has nothing to do with his personality. I just don’t believe that he has a feel for, or, true understanding of the problems that face this state. That’s on the one side. I also think that there are also other issues that he isn’t qualified to address: issues like business climate for the state or promoting the state. I just don’t think being an actor and being successful in making movies qualify him to be the leader of the state. His exposure to the movies gives him the leg up, and he certainly has name recognition, but I don’t think that qualifies him to be governor. Jerry Cobb Reporter CNBC Burbank Yes. If Ronald Reagan could go from Hollywood to the governor’s mansion, surely Arnold Schwarzenegger could do the same thing. There is a real question as to what he stands for and what type of policies he would pursue he hasn’t told us a lot about that. Allen Glazer President Chatsworth Chamber of Commerce The answer is yes. Although he may not have much political experience, he has a brain. The other good thing about him is that he gets things accomplished when he puts his mind to it, and it was very evident from the ballot initiative (Prop 49). We’ve had other people who are stars being governors and they haven’t done any worse than any other politicians, I can tell you that for sure. He doesn’t need the governorship for a job and that sometimes brings a little enthusiasm to the job as opposed to someone who is doing it for their income. Martin Cooper President Cooper Communications Woodland Hills California has had two major elected officials who were Republicans and actors. We had U.S. Senator George Murphy and President Ronald Reagan, but I don’t think that the third time is the charm in this case. In terms of a Republican actor being a major elected official, Arnold Schwarzenegger has never run for office, never had the opportunity to deal with the legislative activities of government and has never been in a position to understand the first-hand experience of the process. So the likelihood of him being a successful candidate is very small. Gary Wehrle CEO Pacific Crest Capital Inc. Agoura Hills Yes I do think he’s qualified because he is very disciplined, has a very good mind, and has been successful both as a bodybuilder and as an actor. Plus I agree with his conservative ideology.
