LABJ FORUM: Is Lunch Hour Just for Lunch?

LABJ FORUM: Is Lunch Hour Just for Lunch? Given the busy lifestyles our readers have, most people in the work world take every advantage possible of the sacred lunch hour. So, the San Fernando Valley Business Journal asks: Aside from the obvious grabbing a bite to eat what else do you try to accomplish in your one hour away from work each day? Robert Sax President SAX Public Relations North Hollywood I make it a point to get out of the office, even if I don’t have a lunch meeting. I work in the NoHo Arts District, which affords me the luxury of walking to several good restaurants. (Staying out of the car may be the best part!) The walk is a great way to collect my thoughts and see what’s going on in the neighborhood. Over lunch I can catch up on the many newspapers and trade publications that I read regularly. After my walk back to the office, I’m refreshed and ready for the rest of the workday. Tim Foutz Senior Executive Vice President NAI Capital Commercial Encino I believe that my answer is very boring: I try to drive the industrial areas to determine the need for space. I find that two prime times for viewing space, or a company’s activity or inactivity, would be mornings for the shipping and receiving of goods and lunchtime when the doors are open and the employees are relaxing. In both instances, the loading doors are open for inspection to determine the company’s need, or lack thereof, for future space. My cherished time is home with family. Boring, but this is what I find most productive to enhancing my real estate career and income. Monica Banken Western Region Manager, Congressional & Public Affairs U.S. Chamber of Commerce Woodland Hills Lunch break? What lunch break? I use my lunch break to sit back, read the newspaper and relax. Lately, I have been using the time to start early Christmas shopping or run errands. It’s a great way to get a jump on all the things I have to do, so after work I’m not running around doing a million errands. Judy Kneisley Senior Vice President & General Manager Lee Hecht Harrison Woodland Hills Most of my lunch hours are used for meeting with customers everything from simply sharing a bite together and catching up, to presenting proposals while trying to avoid getting salad dressing on our papers. When I am not doing that, I sometimes work out or take a walk around a park near the office. Otherwise, I might be shopping at a nearby mall, combining some physical activity with getting those errands completed.
